Egypt Weather Guide: When to Visit & What to Pack

Egypt is a land of eternal sunshine, but the weather varies significantly from the Mediterranean breezes of Alexandria to the desert heat of Abu Simbel. Whether you are chasing the winter sun or planning a summer diving trip, here is everything you need to know about the climate in our top destinations.

  • Best Sightseeing Weather: October to April is the “Golden Window” for Cairo, Aswan, and Abu Simbel.
  • Best Diving Weather: The Red Sea (Dahab, Sharm, Hurghada) is spectacular year-round, but water temperatures are warmest from June to September.
  • The “Khamsin” Warning: Mention that in March and April, Egypt occasionally experiences the Khamsin—a hot, sandy wind that can cause brief temperature spikes.

The Luxor “Dry Heat” Warning: > Luxor has a desert climate with virtually 0% humidity. This means that while 40°C in Cairo might feel “heavy,” 40°C in Luxor feels like a literal oven. The stone temples (especially the Valley of the Kings) act as heat traps.

Top Tips for Luxor Weather:

  • The Early Bird Gets the Cool: In summer, the Valley of the Kings opens at 6:00 AM. Be there at 6:00 AM. By 10:00 AM, the heat reflecting off the limestone can be intense.
  • The Temperature Drop: Because it’s a desert, the temperature in Luxor can drop by 15 degrees the moment the sun goes down. If you’re doing a sunset Felucca ride in the winter, you will need a jacket.
  • Hydration: You will lose moisture faster than you realize. Always carry more water than you think you need when visiting Karnak or Luxor Temple.

What to wear and when

Winter: Layers are key. Cairo and Alexandria can feel very chilly at night!

Summer: Loose cotton or linen clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and high-SPF sunscreen are non-negotiable.

Temples: Remind visitors that stone temples can be surprisingly cold inside during the winter mornings and very hot by midday.
